Feliciano Lopez was pushed to the limit by qualifier Yuichi Sugita before progressing 7-6(6), 7-6(6), 7-6(7).
Sugita – in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time after 18 attempts at qualifying – took Lopez to tie-breaks in all three sets.
The unsettled Eastbourne champion and No.19 seed talked frantically to himself in Spanish from early on in the first set. He was broken as he served for the set in the second, and needed four match points to clinch the match.
Better when coming back from behind, Sugita was never in control, but was unlucky to leave without a set for his efforts.
20:08It brings me no pleasure but it's time to bring the curtain down for another year. Seemed somehow appropriate to leave the last word to Roger Federer. Thanks a billion for reading. What a fortnight, what a final, fast forward to 2015 please...
