Fantasy Wimbledon: Bouchard still a good choice

Fantasy Wimbledon
by Mark Hodgkinson
Thursday 3 July 2014

For Eugenie Bouchard, Wimbledon "is what tennis should be about", and the 20-year-old's appreciation for the All England Club will only have grown after making her first semi-final.

Around the grounds, you will see Bouchard's fanbase, who style themselves Genie's Army, and the Canadian, who plays Romania's Simona Halep on Thursday, is also attracting strong support from tennis enthusiasts playing Fantasy Wimbledon. The values of players are based on data from the last three summers; the only previous year that Bouchard had competed in the women's tournament at Wimbledon was last summer, when she made the third round. And that's why her value in three of the categories – Serve, Power and Net Play – is not higher than 200. Should they wish, everyone playing Fantasy Wimbledon should be able to afford to have Bouchard as one of their selections (in the other two categories, Returns and Mind, she is in the 400-band).

Petra Kvitova is the only one of the four women’s semi-finalists to have previously won a grand slam. You might want to consider selecting the 2011 Wimbledon champion, who plays an all-Czech, all-lefty semi-final against Lucie Safarova. Perhaps as your Power player. Valued at 300, she has been averaging more than 40 points per round in that category.

The departure of Nick Kyrgios from the men's tournament – the 19-year-old Australian wild card was beaten in the quarter-finals by Canada's Milos Raonic – will doubtless mean that plenty of users are going to need to make some changes. As a wild card who hadn't previously played at Wimbledon, he was valued at 50 for all five skills or components, so had understandably been a popular choice.

20:08It brings me no pleasure but it's time to bring the curtain down for another year. Seemed somehow appropriate to leave the last word to Roger Federer. Thanks a billion for reading. What a fortnight, what a final, fast forward to 2015 please...

20:03"I already have seven. It's not like I need another one. But it would have been awfully nice to have it. I think that's what the feeling was of the people, and I felt that... I know they love tennis. They love tennis after we're all gone."
