Live Blog : Wednesday 20 June 2012

by Caroline Cheese
Bye!

19:30Well, I'd love to stay and see it through with Jimmy Wang but I'd probably only jinx him. He's 4-4 in the third set with Roberto Bautista-Agut as it stands and leading by two sets. Follow all the drama on live scores and I'll see you tomorrow for the culmination of women's qualifying.

Result

19:22Michael Russell makes it four American men through to the main draw with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Japan's Yuichi Sugita. The 34-year-old will be hoping for a better draw than last year when he picked out top seed Rafael Nadal...

19:13Here's that Dustin Brown interview I promised earlier. His friends call him Dreddy, for obvious reasons.

19:03Good luck booking a court, Petra. Getting very busy around these parts. I am, as always, available as a hitting partner. I might come in useful if you happen to draw an extraordinarily average player with no second serve to speak of in the first round.

18:53Tweet from @Petra_Kvitova: Wimbledon tomorrow :)

18:45Michael Russell and Yuichi Sugita are heading into a fifth. Jimmy Wang is now two sets up after taking the second on a tiebreak over Roberto Bautista-Agut. Wang the Man.

Results

18:40And there goes another. Guillaume Rufin beats fellow Frenchman Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-3 6-4 - which is probably just as well because there's no way that name would fit on a scoreboard. Ninth seed Simone Bolelli has it much easier in a straight-sets win over Maxime Authom.

Result

18:30Make that five places. Kenny de Schepper of France brushes aside Marcel Felder in straight sets to qualify for the second year running. He lost out in five sets to pint-sized Belgian Olivier Rochus in the first round last year.

18:23A great result for Great Britain as a cup of tea arrives on my desk. In a mug and everything. I suggest you all have one. There are only SIX places left in the Wimbledon men's draw - and Jimmy Wang could yet claim one of them.

Result

18:15Your Wimbledon qualifier No. 9 is comeback kid Brian Baker who wraps up a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 win over Maxime Teixeira. A Wimbledon junior quarter-finalist way back in 2003, Baker will make his Wimbledon senior debut at the age of 27. Amazing story.

17:59Tension over on Court 12 where Guillaume Rufin and fellow Frenchman Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy are into a fifth, with the latter leading 2-0. If ever a name was made to be copied and pasted...

17:56There doesn't seem to be any stopping Brian Baker, who only needs one more set against Maxime Teixeira and leads 2-0. In yet more American good news, Michael Russell leads by two sets to one. Jimmy Wang is a break down - no doubt just toying with his opponent. Bear with me, I have a very long French name to write for the next entry....

17:45Wang-tastic! Jimmy Wang clinches the bagel first set against poor old Roberto Bautista-Agut.

17:36Tweet from Wimbledon qualifier @DreddyTennis (Dustin Brown): Won My Last Round @ #WimbyQualies Vs. A Great Tennis Player & Friend @RajeevRam

17:33Ooh, we've got a Jimmy and a Kenny in action and they're both flying. My new cult hero Jimmy Wang already 3-0 up, and Kenny de Schepper a set and a break up against Marcel Felder. Brian Baker seems to be back on track after the first set hiccup and leads 3-0 in the third.

17:25Tweet from @hannah5272: GO JIMMY!!

17:20Brian Baker is now level at one set all against Maxime Teixeira. Jimmy Wang is up and running against Roberto Bautista-Agut, the 10th seed from Spain. You, like me, may be intrigued by Jimmy Wang. His real name is Wang Yeu-tzuoo but when he was nine, his coach decided Jimmy was a lot easier.

17:13Brian Baker lost the first set against Maxime Teixeira but is battling back now and leads 4-1 in the second. Baker's is a pretty incredible story: a brilliant junior, he was out of the game for six years because of various injuries, but now he's back in a BIG way. He reached his first ATP final in Nice last month, and he will be one to watch at ATP if he makes it through qualies.

16:55Not surprising news but it is now official: Gael Monfils and Michaella Krajicek are out of Wimbledon. Monfils has a right knee injury, Krajicek has a viral illness.

Results

16:46Time to get the Stars and Stripes out. Again. Ryan Sweeting comes back from the brink to beat Peter Torebko 3-6, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4. Meanwhile, Andrey Kuznetsov is also into the main draw after a four-set win over Marc Gicquel. Kuznetsov's nickname is Andreeek according to the ATP website. Unusual.

16:30We have another qualifier and it's Florent Serra. The 31-year-old Frenchman will play in his seventh Wimbledon after beating Matteo Viola 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in a bit of an epic on Court C. Sensational comeback by Ryan Sweeting. He's now 5-3 up in the fifth, having been two sets down against Peter Tarebko.

16:17News just in from Roehampton: our woman on the ground has just spoken to Dustin Brown so expect to see his dreadlocks adorning the Wimbledon website later on. A very charming man, by all accounts.

16:00I'd be surprised if anyone in the United States is concentrating on work right now. Ryan Sweeting is battling back after losing the first two sets to Peter Torebko and is serving to take that match into a decider. Brian Baker is just getting going against Maxime Teixeira. Michael Russell leads 5-2 in the first set against Yuichi Sugita.

Novak Djokovic speaking to Live@Wimbledon:

15:52"I realised my childhood dreams when I won the trophy last year and I have the best memories from SW19. It's great to be back." More from Djokovic and Andy Murray here.

Result

15:46Get ready for the dreadlocks, Wimbledon. Dustin Brown upsets eighth Rajeev Ram 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to qualify for his second appearance at the All England Club. He lost to Jurgen Melzer in four sets in 2010.

15:42I have some App-ealing news for you. The ‏ official Wimbledon 2012 iPhone and Android apps are now ready for you to download.

Another result

15:35Estonia's No. 1 Jurgen Zopp justifies his top seeding and books a spot in the main draw with a 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over Izak van der Merwe.

Results

15:22Melinda Czink flirted with defeat before squeaking through 6-7, 2-6, 8-6 against Maria Joao Koehler. She'll face Russia's Marta Sirotnika next. And we have another men's qualifier: Belgium's Ruben Bemelmans sees off Farukh Dustov 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1.

15:13Just wandered outside and was almost blinded by the sight of Roger Federer strolling past in his bright whites after practice. Head over to our ‏Facebook page to see him practicing a little earlier

14:57Top seed Melinda Czink is in a bit of trouble in her second-round match. The Hungarian is into a decider against Portugal's Maria Joao Koehler. They're on serve.

14:46Controversy on the blog as ‏ @TennisEastCoast claims Jerzy Janowicz was actually the first to qualify (see 1434). It's just as well there isn't a prize for being first and I'm not in charge of awarding it.

14:42If you're down at Roehampton, Court 15 is almost certainly worth a watch. American eighth seed Rajeev Ram is up against Dustin Brown - the dreadlocked German who was brought up in Jamaica but switched nationality to his country of birth two years ago. It's a set apiece, with Brown leading by a break in the third.

FIRST QUALIFIER!

14:34Congratulations Jesse Levine. You are officially the first qualifier for Wimbledon 2012. Levine beats fellow American Wayne Odesnik 7-6 (3), 6-1, 6-2. Poland's Jerzy Janowicz is also through to the main draw, beating American Denis Kudla 6-1, 6-0, 6-2.

14:22There is suddenly a dazzling aura around the All England Club and the sound of angels singing. Yes, Roger Federer is practicing at Aorangi Park. And Li Na.

14:19Peter Torebko facts. Slim pickings, I'm afraid. He's a 24-year-old German and he's aiming for his first Wimbledon. He sometimes wears a bandana. Er, that's it. Anyone know him feel like tweeting in? His family, for example?

14:12Since it's the business end of men's qualifying, they're playing best of five - which is just as well for Wayne Odesnik, who is now two sets to love down against Jesse Levine. Ryan Sweeting is also 2-0 down against Peter Torebko - which is a new name to me, so I shall investigate.

Eastbourne update

14:09After the demise of the top three seeds in the women's tournament yesterday, fourth seed Marion Bartoli is still going great guns, as is fifth seed Angelique Kerber - they're both into the quarters. Defeats for Brits Laura Robson and Heather Watson today.

13:48Back from the Buttery now. Although still confused as to what a Buttery is exactly. While I was gone, Jesse Levine took the first set against American compatriot Wayne Odesnik 7-6 (3). It's all going horribly wrong for another American, Denis Kudla, who trails 6-1, 3-0 against Jerzy Janowicz of Poland.

Lunchtime

13:17Time to refuel. See you very shortly.

13:12The always unpredictable Sesil Karatancheva rebounds from losing the first set to beat Britain's last surviving singles representative Lisa Whybourn 5-7, 6-4, 6-0. Both the top seeds are in action now: men's No. 1 Jurgen Zopp is a set up against Izak van der Merwe, while Melinda Czink is just getting going against Maria Joao Koehler.

13:01For what feels like the first time, I can report on an American loss. Yurika Sema defeats Alison Riske 7-6, 7-5. There will definitely be a U.S. winner on Court 13 though where Jesse Levine and Wayne Odesnik meet in an all-American match-up that will decide who goes into the main draw.

12:51Kristyna Pliskova upends eighth seed Stefanie Voegele 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the the third round where she'll face Irena Pavlovic for a place in the main draw. And it's a sister act! (Sorry). Moments later, Karolina Pliskova serves out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Michelle Larcher de Brito.

12:46A great literal name translation from @davidefluk on Twitter: Pigeon Little Duck. (Paloma Patino) my former assistant.

12:35The first of the sisters has fallen. Erica Sema, the 16th seed, loses 6-0, 6-4 to Irena Pavlovic. She could head over to Court 8 and see if sis Yurika can close out a win over Alison Riske. She leads 7-6, 4-3. The Pliskova sisters are both into deciding third sets in their matches.

Results

12:30Mirjana Lucic is now one win away from playing at Wimbledon for the sixth time in her career after a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gisela Dulko. Alexa Glatch completes a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over 17th seed Aravane Rezai. Turning into a very, very good qualifying tournament for the Americans...

12:22Wimbledon in one word by ‏@jpieslak on Twitter: bloomingwonderfulafavouritepartofmyyear

12:14How would you describe Wimbledon in one word? For me it would be "Henman" or maybe "Bates." For Andrea Petkovic, it's "special." For Agnieszka Radwanska, it's "slippery"? Still, at least no one said "rain".

Results

12:06We have our first winner of the day and it's Jana Cepelova who beats Chanel Simmonds 6-2, 6-2. She is quickly followed into round three by Camila Giorgi, Lara Arruabuena-Vecin and Sandra Zaniewska. And I'm afraid the Wimbledon dream is over for Estrella Cabeza Candela, who loses 6-1, 6-2 to Vesna Dolonc. Maybe time to start using her English name, might bring her a bit more luck?

11:59Britain rejoice. Lisa Whybourn, who is the last Brit standing in either the men's or women's singles qualifying, is a set to the good against fifth seed Sesil Karatanchva.

Score update

11:52Rattling through some of these matches. Just a reminder that the ladies are at the second-round stage, the boys are into their deciding third round matches. Italian Camila Giorgi is 6-1, 5-2 up on 10th seed Olivia Rogowska of Australia. Lara Arruabuena-Vecin is 6-2, 4-3 to the good against Tatjana Malek. Very tight on Court 13 where American Alexa Glatch has nabbed the first set against Aravane Rezai on the tiebreak.

11:39Tweet from ‏ @Adamdbain: Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams unseeded for Wimbledon. Good luck to those seeds who get them in their section.

11:32Interesting match over on Court 14 between 1999 Wimbledon semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic and Gisela Dulko, who beat Maria Sharapova in 2009 at the All England Club. Lucic leading 5-2 in the first.

Fact

11:28Two pairs of sisters in action today. Japan's Erika and Yurika Sema are under way on Courts 7 and 8. Czech Republic's Kristyna and Karolina Pliskova are on Courts 6 and B. Erika Sema needs the family support at the moment - she's 5-0 down to Irena Pavlovic.

11:24Tweet from @JamesClarke75: Nothing like as good as Star Head Candlestick but ex-Everton and Wolves midfielder Segundo Castillo is Second Castle.

Get in touch please

11:13I'm afraid Star Head Candlestick (see 1054 entry) is already a break down against Vesna Dolonc. If you've got any favourite literal name translations, I'm eager to hear them on Twitter ‏@carolinecheese.

Wimbledon seedings

11:03Yes, number fans, the ‏seedings were announced this morning. Bernard Tomic and Andy Roddick seem to be the main beneficiaries. The women go with the rankings.

10:54About five minutes until players will be heading for courts at the Bank of England Sports Grounds. Estrella Cabeza Candela of Spain is on Court 2. Here in England we know her as Star Head Candlestick.

MORNING!

10:30Welcome along to the second straight nice day of this Great British Summer. Qualifying day three coming right atcha when we'll find out which 16 lucky gentlemen will be joining the main draw.
