March 2009
Sixteen Playing for Success students from across the country were treated to an inspirational experience over the weekend of 7th & 8th March, when they were coached at the National Tennis Centre, Roehampton and stayed overnight in the players’ facilities.
Rachel Ganev & Isabel Liffen from Poplar Primary and Rosie Murfin & Helen Chen from Pelham Primary represented the Wimbledon Study Support Centre and joined other competition winners from Norfolk, Nottingham and Kirklees for their LTA experience. The NTC provides high performance training facilities and is frequently visited by Britain’s top players. In fact the group bumped into Andy Murray, Great Britain’s No. 1 player and No. 4 in the world, in the restaurant and ate lunch alongside him!
During their course at the Wimbledon Study Support Centre the students had entered a ‘cinquain’ poetry competition and had written a 5 line poem, rhyming a-b-a-b-a, based around the final point of a tennis match. Having their poems selected and winning the prize to visit such a world class, awe-inspiring venue was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “It was a fantastic and fun weekend, we especially liked the team activities and rooms we stayed in.” The winners were also treated to a sightseeing tour of London before heading home on Sunday.
This is the first time that the four tennis Playing for Success Centres have linked with the Lawn Tennis Association and it is hoped the NTC experience will become an annual event.
