Peng bows out

Friday, 28 September, 2007

While the top two seeds at the Guangzhou International Women's Open advanced with ease on Thursday, third seed Shuai Peng and sixth seed Olga Govortsova both crashed out of the second round.

China's Peng was upset by Tzipora Obziler of Israel in a three-set thriller. Peng then had a chance to win the match as the final set was decided by a tiebreaker, but Obziler held off the local favourite to seal a 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/5) victory.

Govortsova, meanwhile, failed to find her rhythm as she crashed to a 6-2 6-1 loss against Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain.

Top-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues progressed to the next round, dominating unseeded Croatian Jelena Kostanic Tosic in a 6-2 6-2 victory.

Ranked 31st in the world, Medina Garrigues ousted Chinese wild card Sun Shengnan 7-6 (7/5) 6-1 in Tuesday's first round.

Second seed Virginie Razzano was also in impressive form on Thursday, easing past China's Tiantian Sun 6-0 6-0.

Loana Raluca Olaru of Romania overcame China's Zi Yan 6-1 6-4, while fourth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia downed another local favourite, Shanshan Song, 6-1 6-2.

Alicia Molik was a 6-3 6-2 winner over Julie Ditty and Anastasia Rodionova defeated Camille Pin, 3-6 6-3 6-4.
