Luzzi banned by ATP

Monday, 3 March, 2008

Federico Luzzi has been handed a 200-day ban and fined by the ATP after being found guilty of gambling on tennis events.

An ATP investigation launched as part of the organisation's anti-corruption programme found that Luzzi, ranked 139 in the world, had "wagered 273 times on 836 tennis matches between May 2004 and April 2007".

Luzzi, 28, was even found to have once placed a bet on himself to win a match, although the ATP confirmed that the player was not found to have made any attempt to "affect the outcome of any tennis match".

An ATP statement read: "The independent anti-corruption hearing officer confirmed that an offence had been committed under the tennis anti-corruption programme and determined that Mr Luzzi should be suspended from participation on the ATP Tour for a period of 200 days and fined $50,000."
