The American, in her first singles match since giving birth to her son in June, coasted to a 6-2 6-2 victory over the fifth seed from Greece. Former world number one Davenport played as if she never took time off. After falling 2-1 down in the opening set, she won the next 20 points. It was much of the same in the second set for Davenport, who broke Daniilidou's serve to love to go up 2-1. The American eventually closed out the match with her ninth ace. In the second round, she will face fellow American Julie Ditty, a 6-2 6-1 winner over Hana Sromova of the Czech Republic. Third-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland moved into the second round with a 6-4 6-2 triumph over Shuai Zhang of China. Schnyder, who reached the third round at the US Open, next will face Sorana Cirstea of Romania. The only other seed in action Tuesday was number four Anabel Medina Garrigues, who strolled to a 6-1 6-1 win over local favourite Sandy Gumulya. The Spaniard next meets Italian Sara Errani. PA Sport
