Safina safely through in Stuttgart

Wednesday, 29 April, 2009

World number one Dinara Safina progressed to the second round of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart with a comfortable victory over Sara Errani.

Russian Safina, who moved to the top of the women's rankings last week, underlined her billing as favourite to win the indoor claycourt event with an emphatic 6-0 6-1 win over her unseeded Italian opponent.

Elena Dementieva also progressed with a three-set victory over Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Dementieva, the second seed from Russia, looked a little nervy after dropping the second set against her unseeded opponent but claimed an early break in the decider to swing the momentum back in her favour before posting a 6-4 3-6 6-3 win.

Seventh-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki also progressed with a 6-3 7-5 triumph over Iveta Benesova while Agnieszka Radwanska, the eighth seed from Poland, moved into the next round with a 7-6 (7/2) 6-0 win over Aleksandra Wozniak.

Li Na defeated fellow Chinese Peng Shuai 6-2 6-3 while there were also wins for Tsvetana Pironkova, Gisela Dulko and Agnes Szavay.

In the day's final match, Marion Bartoli of France progressed to the second round with a 6-3 2-6 6-1 win over Karolina Sprem of Croatia.
