10 years on: Jamie and Jelena's magic moment

The Murray family has given Wimbledon some of its most memorable moments, but one of the most remarkable involved Jamie and not Andy, exactly 10 years ago at the conclusion of a rain-affected Championships.

In 2007, Jamie Murray was a new face on the circuit and the Championships were the first Slam at which his ranking was good enough to enter the mixed doubles. Thanks to his agent, a partnership with the Serbian singles star, Jelena Jankovic, was arranged and they went into the first round with just 30 minutes of practice behind them. Jelena remembers telling him at the time: “Why are you choosing me? I'm just a typical singles player. You're making a bad choice.”

By the end of the Championships, however, British tennis was celebrating a first Slam triumph for 20 years as Jamie and Jelena lifted aloft the trophy to wild acclaim after beating Jonas Bjorkman and Alicia Molik 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Wimbledon had been captivated by the pair and the popular papers tried their best to portray it as a “love match”. The two players dealt with all of the attention with great humour; Jelena’s laughter was infectious and she even promised “ lots of kisses” to Jamie when he played a great shot.

So, as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the first Murray Slam success at Wimbledon, how does Jamie, now 31, remember the soggy summer of 2007? “Growing up, I wanted to play at Wimbledon and get the chance to play on Centre Court and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I was doing that. It was kind of surreal.

“Everything happened so fast and the weather was so bad that year that we ended up playing five matches in three days – two matches, two matches and then the final on the Sunday. It meant we were just playing and playing and enjoying the experience and then won the tournament! Quite honestly, we didn’t have time to take it all in and think about what we had achieved.”

Jamie has gone on to claim the world No.1 ranking in doubles, winning two men’s Slam doubles titles and helping Great Britain win the Davis Cup in 2015. He has been in excellent form recently, winning back-to-back doubles titles on grass in Stuttgart and at Queen’s Club with his partner, Bruno Soares.

Looking back, he has very happy memories of his first successful double act in a Slam, alongside Jelena. “It was my first Grand Slam because my ranking had not been high enough to play mixed in Australia or at the French, and so when I put my name down at Wimbledon it was the first time I had entered the competition. I don’t exactly remember why my agent approached Jelena, who had also signed up. She could have said “No”. She was already a top singles player and that was my first year on the tour and I was probably lucky that she lost relatively early in the singles that year. If Jelena had kept winning, she may have pulled out to concentrate on that competition.

Quite honestly, we didn’t have time to take it all in and think about what we had achieved.”

“We did really enjoy the experience and to win a Grand Slam at Wimbledon in my first tournament was amazing – I never expected that to happen. It was a huge confidence boost because it showed me I could play at that level and be competitive and successful. I had only really just started out playing doubles and it was a huge achievement.

“In the aftermath, I was out of the country for around three months playing on the circuit and that is the thing with tennis – you are straight off to another event, and with my ranking I had to play tournaments.”

Younger brother Andy Murray was very nervous and didn’t want to be a distraction at courtside, where the rest of the family were cheering on Jamie in the final. Instead he found a quiet spot to witness the Murray family’s first Slam.

“Andy was nervous when I played that final. I think he managed to get into one of the commentary boxes on Centre Court to watch. I didn’t even know he was watching, and when I came off court he gave me a big hug. I received a replica trophy and it was up in Scotland with Mum and my Gran for a while and we have it at home now.”

So, as it is the tenth anniversary, perhaps now is the perfect time to reunite that Wimbledon winning mixed doubles partnership with Jelena? “I am not planning on playing the mixed at Wimbledon this year,” he says, “but we will see what happens!”
