Inspiring Wider Action

What we do now:

• Ensure all staff have sustainability awareness sessions as part of their briefings.
• In 2019 we showcased our early thinking on our commitment to the environment with a public exhibition space in our Grounds during The Championships.
• We signed up to the UN Sport for Climate Action Framework with a public press conference alongside the other Grand Slams in Paris - find out how we are working to the framework's principles here.
• Wimbledon Broadcast Services is a member of the BAFTA Albert Sustainable Sports Broadcasters Consortium and WBS content is albert certified each year
• In 2021 we held our first Environment Day, teaming up with the COP26 team, the BBC and the Met Office.
• In 2022 building on Environment Day we introduced an ‘Environment Positive Every Day’ theme, providing information to guests about Wimbledon’s actions and encouraging everyone to take environment positive actions.
• In 2023 we held a high profile panel discussion about the role of sport and athletes in mobilising climate action. Read more here.
• Each year we aim to provide more information with our audiences for example sharing our food and drink sustainability story.

Actions we take in this area now:

• Showcase our commitments to our guests through their experience around the Grounds during The Championships and through our communications, producing video content for broadcast and social platforms.

• Promote environmental sustainability during The Championships in different ways… for example in 2019 we showcased our early thinking on our commitment to the environment with a public exhibition space in our Grounds during The Championships; in 2021 we held our first Environment Day, teaming up with the COP26 team, the BBC and the Met Office and in subsequent years have held panel discussions and media briefings.

• Collaborate with our partners and stakeholders on a variety of initiatives, for example with evian offering guest refills to promote a reuse culture and reduce single-use plastic.
• Participating in and supporting local community environmental initiatives through The Wimbledon Foundation and our community programme.
• Continue the guest-facing theme ‘Environment Positive Every Day’ encouraging everyone to take actions so that together we build a community of Environment Positive Champions.
• Include a focus on sustainability at Wimbledon in our Learning programmes delivered to students by The Wimbledon Learning team

Plans for the future include:

• Continued emphasis on sustainability as part of the overall Wimbledon experience, through ongoing creation of content and messaging
• Explore opportunities with our media partners such as the BBC for ongoing learning and education through the platform of The Championships.
• Explore opportunities with our commercial partners for further brand awareness and education.
• Work alongside the rest of the sports industry to promote positive action through the UN Sport for Climate Action Framework.
• Assist our guests in understanding their own carbon footprint in relation to their visits to Wimbledon through our digital platforms.
• Exemplify these principles in our day to day behaviours as colleagues, members and neighbours.
