Sporting history is full of stories of a diverse range of people who have overcome challenges and Wimbledon is no different. However, the path has not always been easy or simple for these athletes. Trailblazers in Tennis introduces students to from the last century of Wimbledon’s more than 150 years of history who demonstrate society’s changing attitudes on issues of gender, ethnicity and disability. With a focus on social history and character development, this lecture-based package challenges students to think differently about their own community and how they can be part of making positive change for themselves and others.

Pupils will first learn the differences between the three playing surfaces and how players earn points and rankings throughout the year as they work towards the various Grand Slam tournaments. Then students will have the opportunity to take on the role of a player on the professional tour in an activity where they will have to make decisions regarding their training, travel, finances, and what success looks like for them.

Staging a world-class sporting event takes far more than elite athletes. It relies on experts across operations, media, hospitality, technology, horticulture and more to welcome over half a million guests onsite and reach billions worldwide. Using Wimbledon and The Championships as a case study, this workshop uncovers the breadth of careers that power major sporting events. Students will explore how Wimbledon operates year-round as a Members’ club and visitor attraction, and how teams prepare for and deliver one of the world’s most watched tournaments. Through real examples and practical guidance, students will gain insight into lesser-known roles in sport and leave with tips for next steps in their own career journey.

At Wimbledon that innovation is involved in every part of operations, both on and off the court. Students will explore how digital systems support the year-round functions and The Championships from booking courts and managing retail to score matches and running a major sporting event. Through hands-on activities, they’ll uncover the hardware, software and human expertise that keep Wimbledon running smoothly 52 weeks of the year and have the chance to propose their own tech-driven improvements.

This session introduces students to the AELTC’s unique brand identity, and how we move with the times in order to develop new audience and revenue streams. From brand partnerships, audience interaction and broadcast considerations, groups will get an insight into the fast-paced teams that work to keep Wimbledon at the pinnacle of sport.
