Net Zero Operational Emissions - The Championships, Wimbledon - Official Site by IBM
Net Zero Operational Emissions
This means increasing energy efficiency, decarbonisation of energy, heat and transport and balancing any remaining emissions through contributions to climate and biodiversity projects.
Electric lawnmowers are used to keep the courts in pristine condition
We have de-carbonised the Aorangi Player Pavilion, by removing gas cooking, heating and hot water equipment, replacing them with induction cookers and electric boilers.
In collaboration with Barclays we have installed innovative solar thermal collectors on the roof of the Aorangi Pavilion. Powered by the sun, this technology provides zero carbon heat to the hot water system for the building.
We generate renewable electricity onsite with solar panels on our Clubhouse and maintenance buildings at our Community Tennis Centre at Raynes Park, at our main site on our Indoor Covered Courts building, our Technology Services Room and the Media Pavillion.
We continue to extend our programme to remove gas equipment from kitchens on site with 35 of the 42 permanent onsite kitchens electrified by Championships 2026.
Remove the need for generators by connecting our renewable electricity supply to power Championship facilities in Wimbledon Park.
Reducing use of fuel through electrification of vehicles – all buggies used on site are electric, as is the staff minibus, and we use electric buggies to transport guests during The Championships.
We use electric lawnmowers and horticulture equipment around the Grounds.
Increase the proportion of lower emission plug-in hybrid vehicles in the fleet which transports players to and from the Grounds.
Prioritise energy efficiency, embarking on a programme to upgrade transformers, replace lighting with LED systems and install lighting control motion sensors to save electricity.
We trialled more energy efficient LED growlights on Court 15 during the 2025/26 growth period.
During Championships build, we Introduce more efficient processes for building temporary structures, using electric equipment and forklifts, with off-site construction and flat-pack transportation leading to reduced deliveries, lower mileage and emissions.
Offset emissions associated with AELTC staff, player and official flights by contributing to climate and biodiversity projects; in line with SBTi best practice guidance.
Encourage and facilitate more sustainable travel choices for guests through use of The Championships Journey Planner, which highlights the most sustainable options for travelling to and from Wimbledon and provides emissions information for journey options.
Illustrate the carbon weighting of all dishes served to all guest groups for The Championships and offer a range of plant-based dishes.
We showcase the very best, seasonal ingredients from across the British Isles including plant-based options across all our menus. Find out more about our Food and Drink Sustainability here.
Plans for the future include:
Continue to develop plans to reduce and ultimately eliminate dependence on the use of gas for heating and hot water in order to decarbonise our operations
Ongoing purchase of renewable electricity to power the grounds, while continuing to explore opportunities to generate renewable electricity on site.
Introduce zero carbon principles to new construction projects.
Increased focus on climate resilience of our Estate through short and longer term development projects
Continue to introduce systems to meter, monitor and control energy consumption to a more granular level across our estate.
Maximise energy efficiency of existing buildings, equipment and appliances.
Continue to build our Scope 3 emissions inventory, engaging with partners and suppliers to track and reduce our wider emissions
Compensate for unavoidable emissions.
Communicate our aims and progress internally and externally.
