Resource Efficiency - The Championships, Wimbledon - Official Site by IBM
Resource Efficiency
This means we reduce the amount of resources we use, increasing proportion of recycled content as well as the amount of materials reused. The ultimate goal is to design out waste, keeping products in use so that nothing goes to waste.
None of our day-to-day business or Championships waste goes to landfill
Recyclable materials are separated from general waste which generates electricity for the National Grid
Food waste is collected for anaerobic digestion producing high quality fertiliser for agriculture and horticulture purposes
Provide clearly signposted recycling facilities throughout the Grounds for guests
Promote a culture of reuse, reducing single-use plastic waste by providing reusable cups for all drinks served both year-round and during The Championships
Provide reusable water bottles and on-court evian refills for players and offer an innovate system for guest evian refills.
Provide multiple free tap water refill points and encourage guests to bring refillable bottles with them
Garden waste is used to create mulch used around the Grounds
Stringers plastic bags were removed and racket strings are collected for recycling
We have completed construction of a building, the Technology Services Room, which has been designed and constructed to be dismantled, retaining resources used in its construction
Reuse temporary infrastructure such as seating, food and drink areas and partner structures year after year
Established a sustainable urban drainage scheme at our Community Tennis Centre at Raynes Park
Use moisture sensors for our grass courts to promote more efficient water use and use drip-irrigation lines in flowerbeds.
Update flushing systems in urinals to reduce number of daily flushes
Further encourage recycling of catering consumables, for example by introducing parchment liners to food trays
Complement the existing compostable strawberry packaging made using a seaweed-based lining, with the addition of a seaweed-based spoon. Find out more about our Food & Drink sustainability here
Participate in the LTA’s ball recycling scheme for tennis balls used year-round and maintain Championships ball resale scheme with proceeds going to The Wimbledon Foundation
Beautiful acoustic panel installations in the Cavendish Restaurant were produced from used Wimbledon tennis balls
In collaboration with Christy, produce a range of upcycled accessories from surplus towel stock
Addressing packaging from our retail operation, for example the Wimbledon towel is wrapped with an FSC card band, the FSC paper bags used in The Wimbledon Shop also have a fully recyclable paper ribbon handle.
Plans for the future include:
Continue to incorporate sustainable design principles for estate development, designing flexible spaces, specifying minimal resource use and prioritising reuse and recycling at end of life
Introduce water harvesting for new developments
Design reusable or recyclable products using renewable, recyclable materials
Work with suppliers to eliminate single-use plastic packaging
Communicate our aims and progress internally and externally
