Information about the Heat Rule used at The Championships
The heat rule will apply to all singles events at the Qualifying and Main Draw for The Championships 2026. These are the gentlemen’s singles, ladies’ singles, boys’ singles, girls’ singles, gentlemen’s wheelchair singles, ladies’ wheelchair singles, and Quad wheelchair singles.
The heat rule allows for a 10-minute break (15 minutes for wheelchair events) to be taken between the second and third set for best-of-three set matches, or between the third and fourth set for best-of-five set matches, when the heat stress index is at or above 30.1 degrees Celsius.
Only one of the players participating in the match needs to request the break for the rule to be implemented.
It applies to all singles matches including those that have already started.
The heat stress index is a measure that factors together the air temperature, the humidity and the surface temperature, and is measured by a heat stress monitor.
The heat stress monitor readings are taken 30 minutes prior to the start of play and then at 2pm and 5pm.
If there is a change in weather conditions and the rule is lifted, those matches already in progress will be completed with the rule in place.
The heat rule will not apply to matches played under a roof.
The heat rule will not be introduced for matches that were suspended overnight if one set has been completed in a best-of-three sets match or two sets have been completed in a best-of-five sets match.
